Character-Hub is an informal collection of the character design stuff that I get up to every day. As a freelance character artist I get to work with some of the most creative people in their fields. Developing characters has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I guess even my earliest doodles and sketches as a kid were in fact character designs of a kind. I now consider myself very lucky to be paid to bring these blighters to life each day! It’s more than just a job for me – I really enjoy what I do and I believe that comes across in my work.
With a background in digital illustration, advertising and 3D product realisation, now my main focus is character design and character development, sculpting maquettes and character assets ready for rigging and animation for movies, games, advertising and toys.
The process normally starts with rough sketches that get developed into computer generated clay figures, before proceeding to the final stages. Not only do maquettes help with decision-making and sign-off on character designs, they also give an insight into the personality of the character and can inspire the voice artist portraying the character. Maquettes also serve to fine-tune the character design stylistically and foresee animation and posing challenges relating to especially unusual characters or intricate geometry.
Go ahead and take a look at the various Showcase categories and also see the turntable movies on the Blog. I will keep you up to date with my character design work as much as possible – given the constraints of some work being in production and/or under a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA) – while also blogging on general character design matters.
Give me a shout with any of your project ideas and let’s chat. And if you’re in Cape Town, let’s do it over a nice cup of tea – I’ll bring my sketchbook!
